Advisory Commission on Disabilities

The Advisory Commission on Disabilities provides a forum for a wide range of issues concerning people with disabilities. Recommendations on policies, programs and procedures are made to the Mayor and Board of Trustees.

Commission size: 12 members and not more than 15
Term: Each member shall serve two years
Meeting date: 3rd Thursday afternoon

AN INTRODUCTION TO

THE SKOKIE

ADVISORY COMMISSION

ON DISABILITIES

OUR MISSION:

To facilitate improvement in the quality of life for persons with disabilities in the Village of Skokie through information, education and advocacy.

The Skokie Advisory Commission on Disabilities is composed of community members who:

    • Have physical, emotional or cognitive disabilities;
    • Have a family member with a disability;
    • Have professional experience working with the disability community;
    • Have unique training, interests and backgrounds that are of assistance to the Commission in its efforts.

The Commissioners are appointed by the Village Board for two-year terms and serve without compensation. They meet the third Thursday of each month at Village Hall. All meetings of the Commission are open to the public.

OUR GOALS

  • To advise and make recommendations to the Village Board on issues of immediate and long-range importance to the disability community.
  • To discuss and, with the approval of the Village Board, to make recommendations to public and private agencies regarding specific policies, programs and procedures designed to aid those in the disability community.
  • To facilitate compliance within the community with federal and state laws regarding persons with disabilities.
  • To encourage understanding and respect for Village residents who may have disabilities.
  • To educate society about the attitudinal, physical and legal barriers that confront persons with disabilities in order to promote the removal of these barriers.
  • To solicit and respond to input from the disability community.
  • To evaluate the level of services available to residents with disabilities in the community.
  • To provide a resource for information concerning rights, recreation, education, services and assistance for residents with a disability.
  • To work with the Skokie Public Library to maintain the database of information on resources available for medical, physical and psychological needs of residents with a disability in our community.
  • To assist the Skokie Office on Disability.
