ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICES COMMITTEE
In February of 2007, the Village Manager appointed an Environmental Practices Committee (EPC) to examine Village government operations and to recommend more environmentally conscious practices and ways of accomplishing tasks. Examples of areas of focus for the committee include but are not limited to:
1. Vehicle and fuel technology and purchases;
2. Energy savings for buildings;
3. Recycling activities;
4. Green concepts for new/remodeled Village owned buildings;
5. Alternative electrical or natural gas purchases; and
6. Roadway and parking lot designs.
After its inception, one of the many initiatives the EPC began exploring was Clean Air Counts, a cooperative effort to improve air quality in the Chicago region. The Village of Skokie has pledged its commitment to implement several Clean Air Counts strategies, beginning as early as September 2007. A brief description of Clean Air Counts follows below.
The CLEAN AIR COUNTS Campaign
Clean Air Counts (CAC) is a northeastern Illinois regional initiative to reduce ozone-causing emissions, thereby improving air quality and enabling economic development. It is a collaborative effort between the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, City of Chicago, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. This multi-year initiative seeks to achieve specific and significant reductions in targeted smog-forming pollutants and major reductions in energy consumption.
Clean Air Counts strategies can be implemented by individuals in their own homes, by businesses and large corporations, as well as by community groups and local governments. These strategies target the reduction of smog-forming pollutants by encouraging the reduction, modification or elimination of certain practices. Strategies include CAC outreach; reduction of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from cleaning products, paints, building materials, etc.; hosting and participating in events that promote clean air; use of energy efficient computers, appliances, lighting etc.; use of alternative fuels and public transit; implementing regulatory changes at the local and state level and other miscellaneous voluntary programs relating to pollution reduction.
