Application Process for Firefighters and Police Officers
The Board of Police and Fire Commissioners appoints over 40% of Skokie's work force. This is a "civil service" type selection process that begins with a competitive testing program.

The Village of Skokie, conducts physical agility and written testing for firefighter and police officer positions. The final candidates are rank-ordered on an eligibility list that remains in effect for a two-year period.

Applications for firefighter and police officer positions are available at the mandatory orientation sessions. There is no transfer arrangement for individuals already serving as firefighters or police officers in other communities. All potential candidates must participate in the entry level testing process regardless of prior experience.

New hires are required to complete training at either the Fire or Police Training Academy unless they have prior experience. They are also required to sign a non-use of tobacco agreement and, within the probationary period of hire, police officers must prove residency within Cook, DuPage or Lake Counties.  Within the probationary period, firefighters must prove residency within Lake, Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Will and McHenry counties in Illinois, Kenosha County in Wisconsin and Lake County in Indiana.

For questions or additional information regarding the selection process, please contact the Village of Skokie at 847/933-8212.
