For Immediate Release Skokie Memorial Day Observance A Memorial Day observance ceremony will be held at Veterans Memorial at Krier Plaza (the intersection of Lincoln Avenue, Niles Center Road and Oakton Street) at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 26, 2008. Released by For Immediate Release Skokie Village Hall Offices Closed for Memorial Day The Village of Skokie offices will be closed on Monday, May 26, 2008 in honor of Memorial Day. Regular Village Hall business hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Finance Department also is open from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturdays from May through October. Village Hall is closed on Saturday during holiday weekends, including Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day. Released by For Immediate Release Skokie Bicycle Safety Day The Skokie Traffic Safety Commission is sponsoring Traffic Safety Week, held May 26 to June 1, 2008. Traffic Safety Week is designed to further public awareness of traffic and pedestrian safety 52 weeks a year. Join your friends and neighbors at the annual Village of Skokie Bicycle Safety Day, Sunday, June 1, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Oakton Park, 4701 Oakton Street. Children through age 14 can participate in games and win prizes. A bicycle safety course will be provided to test their knowledge of the law and their ability to properly handle a bicycle. Prizes are awarded to participants. Bicyclists can register their bicycles with the Skokie Police Department this day as well. Members of the Skokie Park District, Skokie Police Department and the Skokie Fire Department will be on hand to promote pedestrian and traffic safety. The rain date is June 8. Released by Public Information Division May 8, 2008 CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY – ROAD CLOSURES NOTICE: The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has informed the Village of Skokie that it will replace track and roadway approaches to two Skokie Swift rail crossings. While road closures are necessary for this track crossing improvement project, CTA indicates that Skokie Swift service should not be interrupted. Construction on the improvement to the crossings at Oakton Street and East Prairie Road is scheduled to begin on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 9 p.m. and is expected to last for one week, concluding on Thursday, May 22, 2008 by 5 a.m. For Oakton Street: Oakton Street will be closed to traffic between Skokie Boulevard through LaCrosse Avenue. Eastbound traffic will be re-routed via Niles Center Road, Lincoln Avenue, Howard Street and Skokie Boulevard to Oakton Street. Westbound traffic will be re-routed via Skokie Boulevard, Howard Street, Lincoln Avenue and Niles Center Road to Oakton Street. “No Parking” restrictions will be in affect on Oakton Street between Skokie Boulevard through LaCrosse Avenue. For East Prairie Road: East Prairie Road will be closed to traffic between Mulford Street through Harvard Terrace. Northbound traffic will be re-routed via Harvard Terrace, Crawford Avenue and Hull Street to East Prairie Road. Southbound traffic will be re-routed via Hull Street, Crawford Avenue and Harvard Terrace to East Prairie Road. “No Parking” restrictions will be in affect on East Prairie Road between Mulford Street and Harvard Terrace. Released by Public Information Division For Immediate Release Village of Skokie Memorial Day Refuse and Yard Waste Schedule Due to the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 26, 2008 no refuse, recycling or yard waste collection will take place that day. Refuse & Yard Waste: The Monday refuse and yard waste collections take place on Tuesday. Tuesday collections take place on Wednesday. The Thursday and Friday collections are unchanged. Recycling: The Monday Green route will be collected on Tuesday. The Tuesday Green route will be collected on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday Green routes are unchanged. Released by For Immediate Release CTA Approved Additional Weekend Service for the Skokie Swift Yellow Line The CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) Skokie Swift Yellow Line offers weekend service. The weekend service runs from 6:10 a.m. to 11:15 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The CTA expects that by adding the additional service, public transportation will become more convenient for those who work or shop in the area and also reduce traffic congestion. The additional weekend service will be evaluated after six months to determine if it will become permanent. The Skokie Swift Parking Lots will no longer be free on the weekends during the Skokie Swift Yellow Line’s hours of operation. For $1.50, patrons may park in the Village’s North Lot, which is located just north of Dempster Street and accessible from Gross Point Road. Released by May 5, 2008 Recycling and Yard Waste Collection Schedules to Change Beginning in June, 2008 Recycling Collection When the new weekly service begins, residents will no longer need to refer to the ‘green’ and ‘gold’ recycling collection routes.
Residents are requested to please not mix garbage or yard waste material in the recycling cart. In curbside collection areas, set out recycling containers by 7 a.m. on collection day, but not before 6 p.m. the night before. The total weight of the filled recycling cart should not exceed 150 pounds. Please flatten large boxes and place next to the cart. For more information on acceptable recyclable materials and recycling collection, please visit www.skokie.org. In June 2008, the Village also will enter into a new contract for collection of refuse and recycling from condominiums in Skokie. The new contract is with Veolia Environmental Services. The Village expects to keep program changes to a minimum, and any necessary changes will be coordinated with individual buildings or condominium associations. Recycling and Yard Waste Collection Yard Waste Collection Yard waste collections will continue to be collected by the current contractor, Groot Industries, through May 30, 2008. Village crews will begin collection on June 4, 2008 and continue through October 15, 2008 when the Village’s fall leaf collection program begins. After October 15 th, residents will need to call the Public Works Department to schedule a collection of yard waste. In previous years, the Village contracted with a private solid waste hauler to provide yard waste collection service. With Public Works crews providing the service this year, the Village will save approximately $100,000 over private-sector proposals that were received this year. Due to Public Works crews providing the 2008 yard waste collection, residents will not be required to purchase pre-paid stickers as would likely have been required if the Village had continued with a private contractor.
